Jamboree Committee PDF Print E-mail

The Jamboree Committee is a group of dedicated volunteers who work behind the scenes. It is the time and effort contributed by these individuals that makes the Jamboree experience possible for the Scouts of Greater Yosemite Council. The Committee begins their work more than two years before the jamboree. Most of the committee members do not attend the Jamboree with the local contingent. However, many of them volunteer on National Staff during the jamboree.

Cliff Bailey - Chairman

The Chairman is appointed by the Council President. It is the responsibility of the chairman to recruit, select and officially appoint all jamboree committee members and assigns specific responsibilities to those members. The chairman also initiates and coordinates jamboree committee actions. He makes regular reports to the council executive board on jamboree activities.

Cliff BaileyCliff Bailey is an Assistant Scoutmaster with troop 21 in Turlock, California. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1963. Cliff has been to two National Scout Jamborees and three World Scout Jamborees. He has also been to Philmont Scout Ranch four times and the Florida Sea Base. Cliff has been awarded the Silver Beaver and International Scouting Award. He also had lead the Woodbadge Training Course. Mr. Bailey is also serving as the Jamboree Contingent Coordinator for the Greater Yosemite Council.

Mr. Bailey currently serves as the Director of Facilities and Services at California State University, Stanislaus. He has worked at the university since 1975. During that time, he served for12 years on the Alumni Board. Mr. Bailey has also been actively involved in the community as a member of the Turlock City Arts Commission and Turlock Public Arts Committee. He is well suited to these responsibilities having earned a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from California State University, Stanislaus.

Cliff is married to his college sweet heart, Ann. His son, Cliff W. Bailey, earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2002. Mr. Bailey enjoys restoring collector cars, working with landscape projects and serving up meals expertly prepared in his Dutch oven.

Mark Harman - Vice Chairman/ Transportation/ Patches/ Training

The Vice Chairman leads the jamboree committee in the absence of the chairman.

The Transportation Lead develops a complete transportation plan for the council contingent. This plan includes tours before and after the jamboree for the council contingent. He also advises the Jamboree Transportation Service as to the jamboree site arrival and departure date/time for the council contingent using the proper forms.

The Patch Lead supervises the design, ordering and distribution of all patches officially approved for the contingent including the jamboree shoulder patches, recruiter patches, hat patches, neckerchief patches and other patches requested by the jamboree committee.

The Training Lead develops plans for, and conducts, the prejambree training using the Prejambree Training Outline. He coordinates his activities with the region to ensure plans are complete.

Mark HarmanMr. Harmon serves as troop committee chair of troop 119 Hughson. He also is a unit commissioner in the El Capitan District. Mark earned his Eagle Scout award in 1978. He also earned 9 eagle palms. As a youth he attended the 1977 national jamboree held at Moraine state park in Pennsylvania. In 1981 he served on national jamboree youth staff at the first jamboree held at Fort AP Hill Virginia. Mark has served as a scout master and assistant scout master. He attended the 2001 National Jamboree as a First Assistant Scoutmaster and the 2005 National Jamboree as a Scoutmaster. Mark was award the Silver Beaver for his service to the Greater Yosemite Council. Mr. Harman is also serving as a Scoutmaster for the Greater Yosemite Council 2010 National Jamboree contingent.

Mr. Harman is a home inspector and runs his own inspection business. He is a member of Hughson school board and has served in that capacity for the past six years. He has coached his sons youth football team and is a high school basketball official.

Mr. Harman has been married to his wife, Jade, for 22 years. They have four children: three sons and one daughter. His sons, Spencer and Grant, have both earned the Eagle Scout award. His youngest son, Colin is currently a Life Scout. His daughter, Camilla, is an exceptional basketball player and was a member of the Hughson High School varsity basketball team. She is currently attending college in Provo Utah. Mr. Harman is attending the 2010 National Jamboree to share the experience with Colin, as he did with his two older sons in 2001 and 2005. He also enjoys seeing the other Scouts who will join the Greater Yosemite Council contingent grow and mature as leaders.

Rex Starr - Professional Staff Advisor

The Professional Staff Advisor is an employee of Greater Yosemite Council. He is appointed by the Council Scout Executive. The professional staff advisor coordinates jamboree troop promotion and preparation. He works with the jamboree committee chairman.

Rex Starr Mr. Starr is currently serving as the Senior District Executive serving the Big Valley District of Greater Yosemite Council. He began his scouting career as a youth in the San Francisco Bay Area. He returned to Scouting as an adult volunteer, den leader, and troop committee member. As a volunteer Mr. Star also served as a district committee chairmen and unit commissioner. He completed Wood Badge training in 1997. He was presented his first Award of Merit in 1998. Mr. Starr became switched from being a volunteer to a professional Scouter in 2005. He was awarded Vigil Honor in Order of the Arrow in 2007.

As a District Executive, Mr. Starr has been serving the Big Valley District since August of 2005. In the capacity of District Executive, he spends virtually all of his time serving youth. He does this through his involvement with Order of the Arrow, National Youth Leadership Training, the 2010 National Jamboree Committee, and other council responsibilities. In his spare time he is a active member of USA Water Ski as a judge, scorer and professional event official.

Mr. Starr has two adult children, a son and a daughter. His son is a Silver Palm Eagle Scout and Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. His son attended the 1997 National Jamboree and is currently serving in the United States Air Force.

Mark Walker - Public Relations

The Public Relations Lead works with the promotion subcommittee chairman to draw up and implement a public relations plan. He recruits and trains youth jamboree news correspondents.

Mark WalkerMr. Walker is currently serving as Membership Vice President on the Greater Yosemite Council Executive Board. He recently completed 12 years of service as an assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 48 in Salida. He attended the 2001 and 2005 National Jamborees as an Assistant Scoutmaster. Mr. Walker earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a youth. As an adult, he has been honored with the District Award of Merit and Silver Beaver Award. He is also a James E. West Fellow.

Mr. Walker retired in July 2008 after a 33 year career in education. The last 18 years he served as assistant superintendent of Salida Union School District. He graduated from the University of California, Davis in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in experimental design. He holds teaching and administrative credentials and a Master's Degree in education. During his 8 year tenure as principal of a California State of the Art Middle School, he was featured in a WestEd Regional Laboratory case study entitled, "The Principal - A Driving Force for Change". He is recognized nationally for creation of a community learning center nominated in 2007 for the AASA National Civic Star Award and winner of the 2008 California Golden Bell Award. He speaks at national conferences on "The Power of Success-Breaking the Cycle of Academic Failure".

Mr. Walker is looking forward to working with the Jamboree Web Team (a group of more than 25 youth and adults from the United States, England and Austraila) to create the best national jamboree website in the world.

Kenny Buehner - Equipment

The Equipment Lead approves all equipment to be sure that it meets the jamboree standards. He determines the equipment needs for the council jamboree troops and supervises the ordering of this equipment. He supervises disposal and storage of the equipment after the jamboree.

Kenny BuehnerMr. Buehner recently completed six years of service as Properties Vice President on the Greater Yosemite Council Executive Board. He was actively involved in Scouts as a youth. He served for ten years as Scoutmaster with Troop 533 in Patterson. Mr. Buehner has completed Wood Badge training. He has been honored with the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award. 2010 will mark the fourth National Jamboree Mr. Buehner has attended as either a participant or member of the National Staff. He also attended the 1995 World Jamboree in the Netherlands.

Mr. Buehner is a property manager and real estate developer. He is a member and past president of the Patterson Rotary Club. He was a committee member in 2007 of the Westside Friends of NRA.

Mr. Buehner has been married to his wife, Cori, for 31 years. They have two sons (both Eagle Scouts) and two daughters. He will be on national staff at the 2010 jamboree serving as the Maintenance and Supply Officer for Subcamp 6. Jamborees are in his blood. He will continue to attend them as long as he is asked to serve.

Brian Ramos - Equipment

Brian RamosMr. Ramos currently serves as the Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 21 and the Assistant Advisor for Crew 21 in Turlock, California. He serves the Greater Yosemite Council as a member of the Properties Committee. He has taken special interest and dedicated much time to the improvement of Camp McConnell. He has been honored with the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award. He has earned both his Wood Badge and Sea Badge.

Mr. Ramos is the general manager for Swanson Farms in Turlock, California. He is a member of Turlock Grace Church and has gone on church missions to Mexico to build houses. He also actively serves the community through his participation in Turlock Together (a food bank) and Sons of American Legion.

Mr. Ramos has been married to his wife, Sue, for 24 years. Sue is also a dedicated Scouter having served as a Crew Advisor for six years. They have a son, Cory, and a daughter, Heather. Cory is an Eagle Scout and attended the 2001 National Jamboree with his father. Heather was a Girl Scout and a Venture Scout . The entire Ramos family spent a memorable week at the Florida Sea Base.

John Drebinger - Promotion

The Promotion Lead coordinates promotional efforts and plans. He works to ensure that every youth who wishes to take part in the jamboree has the opportunity. He conducts jamboree promotion rallies and works with the jamboree unit leaders to promote the jamboree. The promotions lead works with the public relations subcommittee to drew up and implement a council jamboree public relations plan. He secures community resources.

John DrebingerJohn Drebinger Jr. currently serves as the Chartered Organization Representative for Troop 238 in Galt. Mr. Drebinger Jr. is an Eagle Scout and a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. He has been recognized by the Greater Yosemite Council with the Silver Beaver award. He has served as Camp Director at Camp Cherry Valley on Catalina Island and Camp 49er in the Gold Country. He is Wood Badge trained and has served on the staff of several National Youth Leader Training courses. Mr. Drebinger is also serving as a Scoutmaster for the Greater Yosemite Council 2010 National Jamboree contingent.

John Drebinger Jr is a nationally known Certified Speaking Professional. He presents motivational safety presentations to most of this country's top corporations. An expert in communication he teaches leaders how to make their presentations effective. He is also a Certified Hypnotherapist which he studied to enhance communication skills. A professional magician he is proud member of the prestigious Hollywood Magic Castle. His community service includes his Church, St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elk Grove. He serves as Board President for "The Sending Place", an organization that trains short term Christian missionaries. He is a Past President of the Galt Rotary Club.

John Drebinger Jr. has been married for 38 years to his wonderful wife, Karen. She is also an active Scouter who served at the 2005 Jamboree on staff at the BMX bike area. They have two children, Jessica and John III.

The Health and Safety Lead sees that all medical forms for jamboree participation are approved, signed,and transmitted to the National Council. He checks all tour plans and tour permit applications carefully to see that they are adequate to protect the health and safety of participants.

Toni Welch - Financial Aid

AvatarToni Welch is one the rare people who can truly say she has "done it all" when it comes to being a Scouting volunteer! Her work as spanned the range of activities from Cub Scout Den Leader to National Trainer. Along the way her service has included work with: Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, Exploring, and leadership roles at the district, council, region, and national levels. Some of her jobs have included: unit committee, district commissioner, council board, training lead, course director, day camp director, National Camping School task force and Philmont training Center faculty member.

Mrs. Welch has earned many Scouting honors including: Wood Badge Beads, Cub Scouter Award, Scout Trainer's Award, District Award of Merit, Distinguished Commissioner Award, Commissioner Key, District Committee Key and Silver Beaver Award.

Mrs. Welch works for the State of California - Department of Transportation as a Right of Way Agent (Appraiser). Her hobbies include reading, sewing, cross-stitching and being with her grandkids.

Cindy Vander Ploeg - Comptroller

Cindy Vander PloegMrs. Vander Ploeg currently serves as the membership chair for Pack 545, Troop 515 and the Waukeen District Committee. She is also an associate advisor for Venture Crew 515. She is Wood Badge trained and is on the 2009 Wood Badge staff. She has taken several High Adventure Training courses including Okpik (cold-weather adventure camping), Backpacking, and Paddlesports. Mrs. Vander Ploeg was given the District Award of Merit in 2004.

Mrs. Vander Ploeg works as a supervisor in the Sales Support Department at US Foodservice. She has worked there since 2001. She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She and her family are members of the Diablo Bowmen Archery Club in Clayton, California.

Mrs. Vander Ploeg has been married to her husband, Scott, for 17 years. They have three sons–two of whom will be attending the 2010 National Jamboree. In fact the Jamboree has become a family affair for the Vander Ploegs. Husband, Scott, is a Jamboree Assistant Scoutmaster. Son, Kyle, (16) is also a Jamboree Assistant Scoutmaster. Son, Cory, (13) will be attending as a youth participant and has been assigned the job of Senior Historian for Greater Yosemite Council. Mrs. Vander Ploeg will be working on National Staff at the archery range. She looks forward to spending time with the youth at the jamboree.
